Create Your Dream Kitchen
with Village Kitchen Design
by Kate Clabough

I imagine meeting with Gary Henley of Village Kitchen Design to discuss new cabinets for my home would be much like my recent interview with him. I sat at the breakfast bar in his kitchen with a hot cup of coffee in hand, as he showed me the unique features, quality construction, and architectural versatility of his own stunning cabinets. He answered my questions, shared his insight and expertise and guided me through the process of choosing cabinets, not just for the kitchen, but also for all areas of the home.

Henley introduced me to Crystal Cabinet Works, the beautiful line of custom furniture-style cabinetry he represents. Henley has examples of different styles of Crystal Cabinets throughout his home showing a variety of finishes, heights, styles, and price points.

“I’m very opinionated about cabinets,” said Henley.

As he would be, having worked in the industry for 33 years. He knows the ins and outs of each accessory and gadget in Crystal’s Book of Essentials. From spice racks and cutlery trays to roll-out storage baskets and tip-out sink fronts, the “wish me book,” as Henley calls it, has just about everything you can imagine and even a few things you probably couldn’t.

Henley takes time to get to know his clients so he can help them make the best cabinet choices for their lifestyle. He asks such questions as, “What is the primary purpose of this room?” “Do you like to cook?” “How much and how often?” “Do you entertain frequently or just when the kids come to visit?”

“This is their kitchen, not my kitchen or den or bathroom,” said Henley. “I take time to get to know what their expectations are and then I guide them without pushing them. I help them decide on a focal point and the details that are important to them, because it’s all in the details.”

Although now a resident of Tellico Village, Henley is a native of Detroit. Therefore, it is not at all surprising he uses the analogy of buying a car when talking about cabinets.

“A person may invest $25,000 or $30,000 in a car that they’ll drive for just a few years.” Henley said. “Why not invest the same amount in a kitchen that will be with them for the lifetime of their home?”

I don’t know about you, but this is definitely the way I’d want to make an investment like that, in a friendly unrushed atmosphere with my designer’s undivided attention. It is so much better than sitting in the middle of a noisy discount hardware/lumber/cabinet combination store talking to a person who was just promoted from plumbing supplies to cabinet design last week. And you won’t be interrupted by a shopper hunting for Gorilla Glue or thumb tacks either.

For nearly six decades, Crystal has taken great care in creating custom cabinetry with a durable, long-lasting finish. What began in the home garage of Tom Hammer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as a custom cabinet shop, producing cabinets primarily for the local building trade, has now evolved into the number one custom cabinet manufacturer within the custom cabinet marketplace. As Crystal continues to explore new cabinet markets, they are determined to offer the finest in custom cabinetry design available today – and in the future.
