Sir-Lamps-A-Lot

By Shannon Cournoyer

An unusual lamp store is in downtown Athens. Open almost seven years, Sir-Lamps-A-Lot has beautiful new and antique lamps but can also turn just about anything into a custom lamp.  Can’t quite let go of a favorite golf bag? Owner C.H. Wilson can turn it into a lamp. Have a pair of sandals that are gorgeous but hurt your feet? Make them into a one-of-a-kind lamp. He’s done both of these projects in the past. And if a lamp you own is almost what you want, he can make changes to bring it up to exactly right.

   C. H. offers many choices of shades. Square, round, cut corner, scalloped edge, silk, burlap, linen; he has them all in prices beginning in the single digit and going up to the triple digit. Most of his shades are in white or cream but he can custom order a shade in almost any color. Lamp accessories such as a wide assortment of finials, the piece that you see above the shade, can be found here in brass, crystal and acrylic and in shapes such as a bear or golf ball.

He also offers a wide assortment of light bulbs at competitive prices. C. H. enjoys refitting an old fixture or lamp. If you have an older chandelier or ceiling fixture or find the perfect one at a flea market, bring it in and he will rewire it to modern specifications. He’s always careful though to refurbish it but to leave the antique patina.

He doesn’t want to take away the charm of it. C. H. says, “If a nice old lamp doesn’t work, don’t put it into the trash, bring it to me.” He enjoys giving it a new life. C.H. also has an excellent assortment of lamp parts and will give some coaching if someone wants to try it themselves. But he does caution that if wires aren’t connected right, someone might receive a shock from the lamp.

Sir-Lamps-A-Lot is connected to Pam’s Pizazz, an interior design business. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The business is located at 106 North White Street in Athens with a phone of 423-745-4141
